Winning a prestigious tennis event, such as a Grand Slam, stands as a towering achievement. And yet, greatness can transcend trophies. Here at USTA/Midwest Tennis & Education Foundation, we believe success comes from creating pathways, empowering players and providing outlets and opportunities.
You have probably heard of Todd Martin, a man whose tennis background is highly decorated. More than 30 years ago, he founded Todd Martin Youth Leadership (TMYL) a thriving National Junior Tennis and Learning chapter for the youth of Lansing, Mich. Today, TMYL stands as a beacon of hope for young people, especially those from under-resourced families and communities. TMYL primarily serves students in the Lansing School District, offering after-school tutoring, year-round tennis coaching and summer youth programs, which teach life skills and leadership development.
The chapter is making a tremendous impact. They have measured an 84% increase in participants’ physical activity hours and a remarkable 105% rise in academic tutoring hours. In 2023, we were also able to measure participants’ social and emotional learning (SEL). Our findings demonstrated how participants set goals, show empathy, make responsible decisions, maintain relationships and more! This data is key to helping our youth, particularly in this urban district where more than 89% of children enrolled are considered, “economically disadvantaged.”
Organizations like TMYL make it possible for a child to pick up a tennis racquet while learning essential life skills. They become active and their academic performance improves, confidence soars and kids feel empowered.
This journey is not possible without your support. You can become a tennis legend and make a difference for just one child. By contributing $25 to the USTA/Midwest Tennis and Education Foundation, you're not just donating; you're investing in the future of youth across the Midwest. You help ensure that one more child can participate in programs like the Todd Martin Youth Leadership chapter. You bridge the gap between sports and education, enrich lives and break barriers for children from under-resourced communities. Together, let's build a legacy of empowerment… One backhand, one lesson and one donation at a time.
