Here’s the story of how a community tennis program stepped up and did a small thing in a truly great way! Advantage Cleveland Tennis and Education, Inc. served over 100 children a day at their summer camp on local courts when, unexpectedly last summer, they found themselves pivoting to redesign their new online program in a meaningful way for 50 kids during a pandemic. This community program received an emergency COVID-19 relief grant from the USTA/Midwest Tennis and Education Foundation and found new ways to engage campers through Google Classroom and Zoom. After home-deliveries of racquets and supplies, Advantage Cleveland created virtual tennis drills, then added robotics, coding, cartooning, dance and STEM activities and even a poetry slam to a growing library of workshop offerings. Current events spawned “civic engagement” webinars every Friday to provide the campers with a safe space to process the high number of protests being reported in cities across the country.
Advantage Cleveland’s summer camp generated small projects to impact a child in a great way. One entrepreneurial project was how to design and market an original T-shirt logo and theme. The kids were taught how to create a concept, then they learned the process of design, and finally they were shown how to take their creation to market. Their goal is to use their “T-shirts for Justice” as a way to raise money for a charity of their choice. This partnership between the USTA/Midwest Tennis & Education Foundation and Advantage Cleveland Tennis & Education is a perfect example of how hands-on urban education can take place virtually and socially distant…and still create an important opportunity in the community.
